I just finished John Grisham’s novel “The Appeal”.
Plainly told, the story revolved around how to get elected but since Grisham is known for legal-fiction, the election is for the Mississippi Supreme Court. Yes, anyone can be elected with the right marketing, proper timing and of course lots of the ever powerful dollar.
There were times I can’t believe it was fiction, the scenarios were just so real. Coming from a country that is known for colorful elections I found “The Appeal” very familiar and close to home.
The story was rather slow in the beginning, picked up a bit, went slow again. All through the story it was like a roller coaster ride – but just the kiddie kind. Hope, despair then hope again. I found it a bit long winding -- but I kept on hoping for a happy ending.
For me, it was kind of one sided. While the “bad” camp had everything on their side, the “good” ones did not even had a chance. So much like real life -- it is never fair.
It is not going to be my favorite Grisham book, specially with the not so typical ending, but still interesting enough. You see, I am a just a simpleminded reader who thinks Grisham can never make a bad novel.
Have you tried a Grisham novel?
