In 2002, the Canadian Tulip Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary and Canada Post issued four domestic rate commemorative stamps featuring the tulips 'City of Vancouver', 'Monte Carlo', 'Ottawa' and 'The Bishop'. Just 4 of the 150 known species of this beautiful flower.

Canadian Provinces and Territories
In June 1979, 12 stamps were issued for the Canada Day celebration.
The set (shown above) shows the flags of the 2 Territories and
10 Canadian provinces.
That was in 1979.
Now, there are still 10 Canadian Provinces but already
3 Territories with the addition of Nunavut in 1999.
The main difference between a Canadian territory and a province
is that a Canadian province derives its powers
directly from the Crown, according to the Constitution Act of 1867.
Territories get their powers from the Canadian federal government.

My 100 Year Old Stamp
My oldest stamp, not Canadian but Newfoundland.
This stamp was part of the Royal family issue, popularly referred to as the ‘Royal Portraits’. Prince Edward is featured in this 1⁄2 cent stamp and was one of the eight stamps issued to honour the 60-year reign of Queen Victoria.
Issued starting August 1898, the "Royal Portraits" remained in use until 1918.
If this particular one belonged to the first batch, this stamp might already be 111 years old.

Philippines and Steel

The Philippines and Steel. Two things close to my heart. Thus, my first stamp feature depict these 2 things.
I believe there are 4 stamps to this set. I have never found the one that will make my set complete - but still I am happy I have these 3. I've had these stamps even before I joined NSC.
Because there is not much information on Philippine stamps, I just assumed they were issued around 1970, when the idea of an Integrated Steel Mill in Iligan was born.
A dream. Distant memory.

Stamp Collecting
Collecting something?
I love collecting stamps. Finding a new one to add to my collection really makes my day. Yes, you can say I belong to that diminishing number of "nerdy" people who collects these small pieces of used paper. Stamps are fun to collect for a lot of reasons:
1) They are very informative. Stamps will make you want to read about a variety of things.
2) There are no rules, your collection can suit your interest and reflect your personality.
3) It covers a great assortment of subjects from science to art, history to sports. There is never a dull moment with stamp collecting.
4) It does not cost much to collect.
5) It is a great stress reducer. You can get lost in this hobby for hours.
6) It is not bounded by time. You can do them anytime, take a rest and come back after several months or years.
7) You can do it alone, or among groups.
This is an introduction to my future postage stamp features in this blog.
